Change the starter in my brother inlaws 2000 century. When I try and reconnect the battery the motor starts trying to fire. Keys are not in the ignition. What the hell?

Sounds like you have a short somewhere! Not too familiar with how this works in cars, but check the starter and solenoid? I know shorting the solenoid or the starter is an old trick to starting a motorcycle that doesn’t have a working start button.
Edit: Or maybe the wiring on the starter is backward???

Sounds like the solenoid is stuck closed. Is this a new or reman starter? I replaced the starter in my Town Car last summer; two bolts and two wires and it was finito.

Stuck solenoid, unless you somehow put the Big Wire to the starter on the start side post of the solenoid
instead of the correct one.

Got it wired right now and the car starts but makes a high pitch squeak.

Ok got the wiring right and the car to start but it makes a super loud noise now on start up almost like the starter isn't disengaging?

I would return that starter as defective and ask for another one.
one of the problems with parts-store “remanufactured” parts is some rebuilders will only replace the failed component and clean it up. if something else is marginal they’ll just leave it. or maybe it was damaged afterwards. perhaps the solenoid is binding or the engagement lever/mechanism is Alfa Foxtrot Uniform .

GM 3800 engine? The starter appears to have a mechanical solenoid kickout and mechanical gear throwout, so it’s possible you have some kind of alignment issue that’s binding the gear in. Or, the bendix (mechanical screw throwout) is sticking/otherwise messed up. Or, the solenoid lever is bound up somehow. The bendix needs to be in good shape to mechanically throw, because it has to push the solenoid off as well.
There are shims sometimes used on the similar starter on GM 6.2 diesels to ensure correct alignment, so alignment can sometimes be A Thing.
Other than that, I dunno.

Yeah, I didn’t know from 3800 starters, but I looked up a picture and started having endless starter replacement on 6.2 flashbacks from the similarity, so I figure you’re on the money. I think I remember seeing a solenoid throw lever that was actually
bent

First thing I though of too; the starter needs to be shimmed so the bendix doesn’t bind and will disengage.

its a 3100 on this rig, going to take them both off and wire them up with jumper cables to see if they do engaged as they should, then play with the alignment . There wasn’t any shims on it so maybe it needs some.

Hope it is the starter because who knows what the hell else it could be short of it needing shims.

Hello my frie nd! I am trying to locate an original M onno Sportee car made in Canada. I had found one 10 years ago a red one and my son was sent to Iraq at the same time so I passed on it. Dang! Now 10 years later I am scouting for one again. Know of any?? Tim my53vwbeetle@juno.com

Hello! Sorry you passed on one, there was another fella on here who was also looking for one as his father, I believe, had and worked in the factory here in Lethbridge that produced it. I have been looking around but no luck yet!
